I’m a freelance photographer based in San Francisco.
There are many things I love in life: hiking tall, forested mountains, getting lost in the woods, long drives on empty roads with old country music, dramatic weather, chasing light, foggy days, huge messy meals with a bunch of my favorite people, and telling stories around food. I started a creative food site in 2007 called “52 Dinners” as a way to give voice to some of those favorite things. Over time, that morphed into a more familiar recipe journal, The Year in Food.
The idea behind this site is to use food as a lens to chart the course of the year through creative cooking and eating with an emphasis on seasonal fruits and vegetables. And while it is about what’s in season, it’s also about the moments and the meals that mark those seasons. So it’s also about the people that bring us that food. And it’s about photography. And a little bit of travel. And the things that inspire me.
I used to be a massage therapist. I had to leave that career because of a chronic, debilitating overuse injury. It was a scary and exhilarating moment. That’s when this blog took off, and also when I launched my freelance photography career. It’s been a dream. Hard and crazy and challenging, but a dream.
In 2014, I released my first cookbook, Vibrant Food (Ten Speed Press). Vibrant Food was inspired by a series that I started called “Color Studies,” which focused on the many mesmerizing colors of produce. The book is about being inspired by color, and using color and creativity to create gorgeous, dynamic dishes. Vibrant Food has received praise from Food & Wine, San Francisco Chronicle, Saveur, The Chicago Tribune, and more.
