Purpose & Objectives

Participants will spend their day(s) under the lights and in front of the camera, taping and critiquing actual video demonstrations of varying lengths.

The purpose of this training is to:

  • Assess current interview level and style, with emphasis on existing skills
  • Provide extensive practice in a supportive, constructive environment
  • Offer direct, personalized feedback
  • Create an individualized action plan for identifying and coordinating opportunities

The objectives of this training are to:

  • Understand how to select and break down appropriate recipes for demonstration
  • Learn how to prepare detailed equipment and preparation lists
  • Determine key message points and identify ways to incorporate them into each interview/presentation
  • Uncover subtle techniques for building an effective relationship with interviewer, host, and audience/viewer
  • Identify ways to make the most of an interview when time is unexpectedly decreased
  • Recognize the differences between commercial and public radio shows
  • Discover how to give powerful radio interviews with strong “visual” appeal
  • Maximize media appearances through social media channels

Course participants will practice:

  • “Blocking Out” the set and choosing appropriate utensils and equipment
  • Cooking and speaking simultaneously
  • Fielding difficult media questions
  • Leading the interview or segment
  • Staying “on track” and “on message”

Lisa Ekus offers more than 33 years experience managing a full service culinary agency that has trained hundreds of cookbook authors, chefs and spokespeople, including Emeril Lagasse, Charlie Trotter, Sara Moulton, Marcel Desaulniers, Barbara Lynch, Ana Sortun and many others. She holds regular media training seminars in her professional studio kitchen as well as on-location trainings around the country for corporate restaurant groups. Ekus speaks regularly at a wide range of conferences and events, including the International Association of Culinary Professionals, Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, The Symposium for Professional Food Writers, Les Dames d’Escoffier, Edible Communities, and the Traverse Epicurean Classic. In addition to her work as media trainer, Lisa is also a respected literary agent, representing both new and established authors to publishers around the globe.
